Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about drywall calculation
For Room Project mode: (Length + Width) × 2 × Height, minus standard door (~18 sq.ft each) and window (~12 sq.ft each) deductions. Ceiling area is added if selected. For Single Wall mode: Width × Height.
The waste factor (default 10%) accounts for cutting losses, mistakes, and damaged pieces during installation. It's automatically added to your material estimate. For complex rooms with many cuts, consider increasing to 15%.
4x8 (32 sq.ft) is the standard size, easy to handle. 4x12 (48 sq.ft) reduces seams on taller walls. 4x16 (64 sq.ft) is for professional installations with fewer joints but requires more helpers to handle.
Horizontal (landscape) is standard for residential - it creates stronger joints and is easier to tape. Vertical is sometimes used for commercial buildings with tall ceilings or when sheets need to span floor to ceiling.
The estimate only includes drywall sheet costs based on your entered price per sheet. It does NOT include labor, tape, mud, screws, or other materials. Use it as a baseline for sheet costs only.
Yes! In the Material Specifications section, you can enter your local price per sheet. The default is $15, but prices vary by region and sheet size. Check your local home improvement store for current pricing.
Currently, calculate each room separately and add the results together. For a whole house estimate, run the calculator for each room and sum the total sheets and materials needed.
For irregular walls, use Single Wall mode to calculate each wall section separately. For angled ceilings or dormers, measure the actual surface area and add extra waste factor (15-20%) for the additional cuts required.
